International Students FAQs

We recommend that students fly into John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York City or La Guardia Airport (LGA) in New York City as there are more flights available and typically are less expensive.

Alternatively, students can opt to fly into Bradley (BDL) in Hartford, Tweed (HVN) in New Haven or Logan (BOS) in Boston.

  • We recommend that students utilize the GOAirport Shuttle Service
  • Reservations should be made a week in advance.
  • JFK service: 7 am until 8 pm 
  • La Guardia service: 7 am until 8:30 pm
  • Fares are refundable up to 12 hours before the scheduled arrival
  • Other alternative options include taking a cab, utilizing a rideshare app such as Uber or Lyft, or taking public transportation. It’s important to note that Uber and Lyft require cell service to work and taking public transportation takes multiple steps and stops.
  • Driving Directions

Students can only enter the country 30 days prior to the program start listed on their initial I-20. All international students are required to attend the in person International Student Orientation. Depending on if you’ll be living on campus or off campus you may choose to arrive earlier. If you’re living on campus you can only move in once orientation begins. Please contact Albertus International staff for more detailed advice.

Authorized work for international students is limited and students should not rely on any income they may receive from expected employment as it is very limited. International students must verify employment is authorized and admissible before beginning work. 

Social security numbers are required to be obtained before a student can begin working. It’s important to work with Albertus International staff to apply for your social security and manage expectations with employers until you receive your social security number.

  • International students are allowed to work on-campus up to 20 hours per week during the semester and up to 40 hours per week during breaks. Students should always verify employment is considered on-campus before working. Violation of this regulation will result in termination of a student’s F-1 status.
  •  On campus work is limited and can not be guaranteed. Students should not rely on income from on campus employment.
  • For approved academic internships also known as Curricular Practical Training (CPT) a student is also able to work. Before beginning a paid internship international students must meet with both the Office of Career Services and Albertus International staff before they can accept or begin a paid internship.
  • Students who graduate from Albertus may apply to work through submitting an application for approved Optional Practical Training (OPT) to the USCIS. Students are expected to work closely with Albertus International staff when applying for OPT. The typically time where the process is initiated is the start of the student’s spring semester of their senior year.

Students must first have an employment offer to apply for their social security card. Employment must be valid and verified by the Albertus International staff. Once this is verified a student completes a social security application and schedules an appointment with the social security office.

Students must either pay their tuition in full or enroll in a payment plan before the semester begins. For fall semester the payment deadline is July and for the spring semester the payment deadline is October.

Scholarships are awarded upon admission and must be maintained by the student according to the rules of the scholarship. Students who are currently applying to Albertus should ask the Coordinator of International Admissions for information on what scholarships they may be eligible for.
