First Lady Jill Biden and U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona to visit Horizons at Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday, July 20
First Lady Jill Biden and U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona's will visit Horizons at Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday (please see official media advisory below). For interested media, please RSVP HERE by Tuesday 7/19 at 5:00 PM ET. The event will be held at Tagliatela Academic Center at Albertus Magnus College (871 Winchester Avenue, New Haven, CT 06511 as well as entry through the courtyard of Tagliatela Academic Center). Media must arrive by 12:00 p.m. No exceptions. The 1-hour program will begin at 1:00 p.m. Media is invited to set up cameras between 9:00 - 10:00 a.m.
Activities will highlight English language arts, STEM, swimming and social-emotional learning activities that regularly take place as part of Horizons programs. Second grade Horizons students will read Jarbari Jumps to VIP guests and participate in a conversation about the book, swimming and doing your best. The First Lady and Secretary Cardona, along with other VIPs will also participate in a STEM Lego activity with first and eighth graders.
Then, there will be a panel discussion moderated by Horizons alum, Brenda Moreno, including Horizons teachers, parents and students who will discuss the critical role of summer learning in supporting student pandemic recovery. The program will conclude with an assembly where students will acknowledge and thank guests.
There will be interview opportunities before and after the program with: Lorna Smith, CEO of Horizons National; Stephanie Kadam and Brenda Moreno, Director of Horizons at Albertus Magnus College; Dr. Marc M. Camille, President of Albertus Magnus College; and Aaron Dwokin, CEO of the National Summer Learning Association; Horizons first, second and eighth grade students, teachers, and parents from Horizons at Albertus Magnus College and Horizons and The Foote School.

The First Lady and Secretary Cardona to Visit Connecticut, Michigan, and Georgia, Highlight How
First Lady Jill Biden and U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona will embark on
a tour across the country to highlight how President Biden's American Rescue Plan
(ARP) is supporting students in getting caught up through summer learning programs.
The First Lady and Secretary Cardona will travel to summer learning and enrichment
programs in Connecticut, Michigan, and Georgia, that use funding from the ARP to address
the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on students’ academic and mental health
needs. These summer learning and enrichment programs work to ensure students have
access to academic and mental health resources over the summer, and are ready to succeed
when they return to school.
Across the country, communities are using President Biden's American Rescue Plan funds
to expand summer learning opportunities and help students recover. President Biden’s
American Rescue Plan provided an historic $122 billion in funding to help schools
safely reopen and stay open, and address student learning loss and mental health needs.
