Albertus Magnus College’s Meister Eckhart Center Receives $25,000 Gift
Dominican Friars Make Generous Contribution on Feast of St. Albert Day
New Haven, Conn., November 17, 2022 – Albertus Magnus College is pleased to announce a generous $25,000 donation from the Dominican Friars of the Province of St. Joseph to the College’s Meister Eckhart Center for Catholic and Dominican Life. The Center integrates and promotes the Dominican values of contemplation and action leading to a more just and peaceful world.
The contribution was made on November 15, coinciding with the Feast of St. Albert the Great, patron of the College. The gift comes in the midst of the College’s annual Albert Week celebration, which features numerous events in honor of St. Albert and promoting the Four Pillars of the Dominican Tradition: Study, Prayer, Community, and Service. The Dominican Friars are members of the Order of Preachers, as are the Dominican Sisters of Peace, who founded the College in 1925.
“What a wonderful surprise to receive this most generous gift during the College’s Albert Week festivities,” said Albertus President, Dr. Marc M. Camille. “In a week where we honor St. Albert the Great and offer numerous events rooted in our essential Dominican education mission, the Eckhart Center gift from the Friars continues the wonderful spirit of collaboration and support between the Dominican Friars and the Dominican Sisters of Peace, our sponsoring congregation.”
“This gift is given in recognition of the long history of collaboration between the Dominican Friars and the Dominican Sisters of Peace and Albertus Magnus College in the New Haven area. This collaboration began in 1901 when the Sisters came to New Haven. We cannot think of a greater gift than the pursuit of a more just and peaceful world,” said Fr. Jonathan Kalisch, O.P., Director of Chaplains and Spiritual Development for the Knights of Columbus and Director of Preaching for the Dominican Province of St. Joseph.
“From the first days of the Eckhart Center, the Dominican Friars have been steadfast collaborators and spiritual guides. We are grateful for this generous gift which will help us continue to build on our mission of engaging the community in dialogue around Dominican spirituality and values,” said the Director of the Meister Eckhart Center, Edward Dunar, Ph.D.
