With spring approaching and the region’s golfers anxious to dust off their clubs, Albertus Magnus College is pleased to announce a new partnership with the New Haven Country Club (NHCC), located in Hamden, Connecticut, to serve as a home course for the College’s Men’s Golf Team. The signing of the agreement was held Friday at NHCC.

“This partnership with NHCC will provide outstanding practice, playing, and recruitment opportunities for our golf program,” said Albertus Magnus President, Marc M. Camille, Ed.D. “Next year, the College will celebrate its 95th Anniversary, and we’re fully embracing our Growth Mindset. This innovative partnership is in the same spirit as our distinctive agreements with the City of New Haven and the Ralph Walker Skating Rink, the home of our men’s ice hockey team, and the Town of Hamden and Rochford Field, the home of our baseball team.”

“We are thrilled to add the New Haven Country Club as a new partner for Falcons athletics,” added Albertus Director of Athletics, Jim Abromaitis. “With NHCC serving as a home course, we now have the flexibility that is needed to meet NCAA Division III practice and match scheduling demands, including hosting the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship in October 2020. We also remain grateful to our long-time City of New Haven partner, Alling Memorial Golf Club, where we will continue to practice and play.”

“All of us at New Haven Country Club look forward to a long and beneficial relationship with Albertus Magnus College, and we extend best wishes to the Falcons for a successful golf season,” offered NHCC President Robert Cox.

New Haven Country Club is a private country club, founded in 1898. NHCC is one of the oldest golf courses in America and actually was formed on land that today includes the Albertus Magnus campus. In 1895, Yale Professor Theodore Woolsey and Justus Hotchkiss, a retired businessman, were introduced to the game of golf. They were able to rent land between Prospect Street and Winchester Avenue and from Division Street to Goodrich Street to create a nine-hole course that opened just before the Yale term began that fall, and Yale undergraduates immediately took to the game. The New Haven Golf Club was formed in 1896 and became very popular. To accommodate increased demand for play and to expand the course to 18 holes, NHCC purchased land in the Whitneyville area of neighboring Hamden, where the club remains today.
