Albertus Magnus College Celebrates 10th Anniversary of Experiential Learning Day
Week-long Milestone Event Will Be Conducted Online
Experiential Learning Day at Albertus Magnus College turns 10 this year, and the College is hosting a week-long virtual event to celebrate this milestone. From April 20 to April 24, students will present what they have accomplished through their research, internships, study abroad, community engagement, or service learning and how they applied what they learned to make a difference in the world. This can take the form of talks, posters, and visual and performing arts.
Normally, this would be a one-day, on-campus event but in response to the State of Connecticut’s Stay Home, Stay Safe order related to the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, this will now become a week-long virtual event. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, the presentations will begin at Noon. On Tuesday and Thursday, they will start at 11 am. All sessions will be recorded and available on the ELD webpage on the Albertus Magnus College website. That same webpage will also feature highlights of presentations, programs, and interviews from the past 10 years.
“Experiential learning is learning through the experience of doing – hands on applications and problem solving – both inside and outside the classroom. Then there is the reflection on that experience to connect it to their academics, their understanding of the world and other people, and to their own self-development,” said Dr. Hilda Speicher, co-founder of the event.
“Experiential learning is considered a High Impact Practice, which means it is an evidenced-based approach to teaching and learning that results in greater engagement by students. This improves their success in terms of better retention, graduation rates, and achieving post-graduation goals like additional education or going onto their career,” said Dr. Sean O’Connell, vice president of Academic Affairs.
Experiential Learning Week will lead up to Accepted Student Day, which will also be virtual this year, on Saturday, April 25.
