Albertus Magnus College Receives Sharon Clemons Award

GNHCC Award Celebrates College’s Authenticity

New Haven, Conn., April 3, 2025 –  Albertus Magnus College is pleased to receive the Sharon Clemons Award from the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce (GNHCC). The honor recognizes an organization that has gone beyond formulaic commitment to actionable steps and a clear understanding of how to achieve its desired outcomes.

In 1925, the Dominican Sisters of Peace founded Albertus Magnus College as New England's first Catholic, residential liberal arts college for women. Ninety-nine years later, the Sisters' founding commitment to educational excellence, defined by inclusive opportunity, remains true and relevant.

On the cusp of its historic Centennial Celebration in 2025-26, the mission of today's Albertus is "to deliver a holistic, liberal arts-based education that promotes the search for Truth in all its dimensions and is practical in its application." Dominican Pillar values of Study, Prayer, Community, and Service stand as distinctive inspiration for Albertus students, faculty, and staff.

Interdisciplinary and experiential learning opportunities run through the College's academic programs. For nine consecutive years, at least 95% of Albertus graduates have attained full-time employment or gone on to graduate studies within six months of completing their degrees.  In recent years, the value of an Albertus education has increasingly been recognized and affirmed with external accolades, including The New York Times, The Georgetown Center for Education and the Workforce, US News & World Report, and Money. Albertus is also a Top 10 Military Friendly School.

During the tenure of Albertus President Marc M. Camille, Ed.D., which began in 2017, the College has embarked upon an ambitious growth agenda. Since Dr. Camille's arrival, the traditional undergraduate program has grown by more than 50% and is now the largest in Albertus' history. Fourteen new academic programs have been launched, including most recently a new Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Connecticut's first Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) to BSN pathway program.

“For us at Albertus, we like to say we practice ‘radical hospitality’— all are welcome at our table. As a Catholic institution, we lean into the tenants of Catholic social teaching where every human being — their dignity is affirmed. Where solidarity in the value of family are what we aspire to. The students who choose Albertus represent our community — in New Haven and afar. As they come to us, we embrace them where they are, we celebrate their talents, and we inspire them to graduate and go on to do great things,” Dr. Camille shared in his videotaped remarks.

Albertus continues to focus on New Haven's and the State's education workforce needs, offering traditional-age and adult undergraduate and graduate programs. More than 85% of the College's students come from Connecticut, and nearly 90% of alumni continue to live or work in Connecticut after graduation. Inspired by its Pillar value of Community, Albertus continues to deepen its engagement in New Haven and its proximate neighborhoods of Newhallville, Dixwell, and East Rock.
