Two online courses — Italian Culture and Civilization and Spanish/Hispanic Culture and Civilization — are taught in English, as are other topics on a variety of cultures and civilizations. Many courses use intensive and multimedia presentations.

You’ll benefit from participating in Spanish Club outings and events, as well as engaging with guest lecturers such as González Echevarría, Sterling Professor of Hispanic and Comparative Literatures at Yale University, who recently spoke on Cervantes’ masterpiece for AMC Professor Christine Atkins’ Don Quijote literature class. As a top student, you may gain recognition from AMC’s chapter of Sigma Delta Pi National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society.

Prepare to teach Spanish at the secondary level (grades 7-12) by completing our program that meets Connecticut requirements for certification/endorsement. Volunteer opportunities enrich your experience in English and Spanish language instruction when you help diverse and multicultural students in offerings such as the afterschool program at St. Rose of Lima Elementary School in New Haven.

Requirements for Concentration in French

The program of French study aims to develop an appreciation of French speaking peoples and cultures. The program emphasizes the essential skills of listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing in the French language. The language of instruction is ordinarily French, unless stated otherwise. Information on international study programs, arranged through universities which sponsor programs abroad, is available for students wishing to enroll in an accredited junior-year-abroad program in a French-speaking environment or to take part in a summer session abroad.
