The Writing Program at Albertus Magnus College

Welcome to the Writing Program

The Writing Program at Albertus Magnus College nurtures and supports student writers with writing intensive "W" classes, the Writing Center, and peer tutors (Writing Associates). As a part of the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence, the Writing Program enables students to experience high-impact practices and integrative learning.

The Writing Center

The Writing Center at Albertus Magnus College provides ongoing assistance throughout the writing process, helping students develop and improve as mature writers and encouraging them to view writing as a means of learning. The Writing Center at Albertus Magnus College provides ongoing assistance throughout the writing process, helping students develop and improve as mature writers and encouraging them to view writing as a means of learning and discovering. Integral to the comprehensive writing program at the College, the Writing Center offers an abundance of reference materials, print, and online resources, as well as the aid of WAs, who provide peer consultations on writing and research for student writers across all disciplines. The Writing Center also affords a warm and welcoming environment in which you may simply wish to compose, edit, or revise your written assignments.

The Writing Center is open for mod 5 from June 5-July 26.

Writing Associates

Writing Associates (WAs) are student peers who are thoroughly trained to offer individual consultations on prewriting, editing, and rewriting techniques across disciplines. They work closely with student writers, providing supplemental writing instruction throughout the writing and revision process.

Our current Writing Associates are Alexandria, Alyssa, Annie, Ashley D., Ashley I., Caroline, Christine, Dalton, Daniel, Isabel,  Janet,  Kaelyn, Kaitlin D., Kaitlyn A., Lauren, Stephanie, and  Zoe.

As you complete four “W” courses as part of your General Education requirements, you’re encouraged to mature as a writer and view writing as a means of learning and discovery across all disciplines. Writing Associates, our carefully selected pool of talented and trained undergraduates, can assist you with every stage of the writing process, including:

·         Prewriting/interpreting the assignment

·         Brainstorming

·         Selecting a topic

·         Planning strategies

·         Generating, clarifying and/or developing ideas

·         Organizing material

·         Documenting sources

·         Discussing elements of syntax and style

·         Revising and rewriting

While Writing Associates do not proofread, correct or edit your assignments, they help you critique your work and become a better proofreader, a more competent editor, and a more confident writer. You can become a Writing Associate (WA) if you write well and excel academically. Faculty members often nominate promising students or you may apply for a position as a Writing Associate. As a WA, you help others improve their writing while you hone your leadership, teaching, and management skills and polish your own writing.

"W" Classes

The comprehensive Writing Program at Albertus Magnus College embraces the philosophy that writing facilitates learning and is a craft demanding practice in disciplines above and beyond English 106 and 107. Consequently, the significance of effective writing is emphasized across the curriculum, and students are required to complete a minimum of four writing intensive "W" classes during the course of their tenure at the College. While writing intensive courses may vary in the length as well as a number of writing/research projects assigned, all require that students visit the Writing Center and consult with a Writing Associate for writing support.

Fulfilling the “W” Requirement Visit to the Writing Center

To fulfill a Writing Center visit requirement for your writing intensive “W” class, please bring at least a third of your essay draft to the Writing Center and work with the tutor for at least half an hour.

For Faculty:

Class Visits

A 15-minute class visit, conducted by a Writing Associate, can inform students about Writing Center services.  Class visits include information about the Writing Center, such as hours, location, services, and “W” requirement visits. Please contact Natalie DeVaull-Robichaud for more information.

In-class Workshops:

In-class workshops run about 30 minutes and provide information on a variety of subjects, including formatting a paper, structuring a paper, revising a paper, and finding sources for a paper. In-class workshops can also be lessons about summarizing, paraphrasing, using grammar and writing specific essays, such as argumentative writing. Writing Associates and/or the director can present the in-class workshop. Please contact Natalie DeVaull-Robichaud for more information.
