Overview Reporting to the Vice President for Finance and Administration, the Director of Public Safety (Director) will provide transformative and relationship-based leadership to the Department of Public Safety in its mission of ensuring the safety and security of the campus for students, faculty, staff, and guests. Public Safety operates 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. As an unarmed and unsworn department, the Director oversees a contracted staff. The Director will collaborate with and serve as a key advisor to the Albertus Magnus community on campus safety issues and security operations, and will work closely with colleagues across the College to refine, elevate, and articulate Public Safety’s vision and mission as a critical element of the Albertus Magnus College community and experience. The successful candidate will be well-versed and fluent in leading thoughtful and transparent conversations with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and external partners. The Director is responsible for working in partnership with the entire campus community to establish and sustain a welcoming, safe, and inclusive living, learning, and working environment. The Director will be responsible for developing strategies and setting protocols to ensure Public Safety team members are a trusted and supportive resource for community members in need of services, with an emphasis on the wellbeing of all being served. Grounded in a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice, the Director will be charged with positively impacting campus through building community and relationships, promoting accountability, and reinforcing community standards and College policies/procedures, as well as working in partnership with external agencies/resources as needed.

Essential Functions
  • Establish and enforce operational procedures for activities such as traffic control, guarding and patrolling physical property, orienting and monitoring of Public Safety Officers, investigation of accidents, violations of College policies, and criminal acts. 
  • Direct activities of Campus Safety Officers; ensure continual collaboration with all departments at the College. 
  • Working with the ITS team, establish and enforce protocols for electronic security including building access, surveillance, etc. 
  • Develop and implement training schedules, policies, and procedures for all Public Safety team members. 
  • Ensure cooperation and coordination of College activities with law enforcement and firefighting agencies, by establishing relationships and coordinating regular meetings. 
  • Establish relationships and collaborate with other educational institutions in the region. 
  • Supervise and maintain all records (institutional and compliance mandated) connected with Public Safety including, but not limited to: incident reports, daily logs, and annual crime statistics to the Department of Education under the Clery Act. 
  • Maintain standard operating procedure manual, and ensure at minimum annual review of policies and procedures related to safety on campus. 
  • Develop protocols and procedures to manage events on campus, including athletic events, large scale College events, and student activity events. 
  • Issue parking permits and provide general oversight of the all transportation and parking policies on campus 
  • Serve on various College committees incuding the DOJ grant for the Prevention of Violence Against Women.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in the social sciences, education, or criminal justice or a related field
  • Advanced degree preferred 
  • 5 or more years of progressive supervisory experience in security and public safety
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Certification in Basic First Aid and CPR
  • Substantial experience working with college-age students
Knowledge | Skills | Abilities
  • Broad base of knowledge and skills related to College security, safety, law enforcement, and investigation. Ability to effectively investigate accidents, violations of College policies/rules/regulations and emergency situations.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and create documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 
  • Ability to clearly communicate in the event of an emergency to students, staff, faculty and public safety officials. 
  • Superior managerial and problem solving skills, with the ability to build positive campus relationships. 
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Special Work Schedule Requirements
  • Evening and some weekend hours required.  
  • On call 24 hours a day/7 days a week
