Overview

The Community Services Librarian and College Archivist is responsible for coordinating with other library staff in the instruction, outreach, programming, reference, and access services for library resources and archival material. The successful candidate for this position will lead the development in innovative information literacy practices that integrate the use of licensed and unlicensed content, open access resources, and archival and special collections. The Community Services Librarian and College Archivist requires collaboration with the College’s Head of Reference and Academic Liaison Librarian in the use of best reference practices.

Since promoting awareness for the Library’s collection is essential, the Community Services Librarian and College Archivist will work closely with the Library’s Scholarly Communications Librarian to promote and market Archives initiatives, newer acquisitions, and general library services. The successful candidate will serve a lead role in curating the department’s physical and digital exhibits.

Serving as College Archivist, this position is responsible for the arrangement and description of archival material in adherence to DACS standard. Overseeing the expansion of the College Archives will require the successful candidate to work collaboratively with the Vice President of Library and Technical Services and the Scholarly Communications Librarian in the creation of a newer records schedule.

The Community Services Librarian and College Archivist will serve as the collection development lead for book and serial collections in the department in consultation with the Library Operations Manager as well as participate in donor relations and grant proposals as appropriate. This position also serves as a backup to those responsible for managing the College’s ILS.

Essential Functions
  • Coordinate cataloging and classification of library materials, including management and maintenance of bibliographic holdings locally and in external systems
  • Oversee operation of College archives
  • Serve as a library liaison to selected academic departments as appropriate.
  • Work with the Manager Library Operations and the VP of LITS to develop and implement new projects
  • Promote library services, facilities, and activities through social media and other channels
  • Support programming of events for the library
  • Create and maintain access services reports and notices
  • Serve as on-ground Library and Information Technology Services staff
  • Support the library staff in the use of the library management system.
  • Maintain and update the research guides using the LibGuides system.
  • Facilitate communications with faculty regarding library services and facilities.
  • Collaborate with librarians on special tasks and projects.
  • Provide collection services, including the shelving of books, removal of books from the collection, and shelf-reading the collection for organization.
  • Provide circulation and information help desk services
  • Provide library reference support and answer questions about research options for students.
  • Manage the digitizing of library reserve materials for faculty and staff.
  • Work with Communications and Marketing to maintain and develop social media accounts for the library
  • Work with the Web Development Manager to assist with the evolution of the College and library websites
Qualifications
  •  Minimum of one year of recent experience in an academic library or special collections setting with experience in reference, instruction, and outreach.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the standards, ethics, security guidelines, and best practices in use by special collections professionals and related professional groups.
  • Commitment to planning, implementing, and assessing user-centered services.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, as well as effectiveness in balancing and completing multiple assignments and projects.
  • Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively and to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness within the Albertus Magnus College community.
  • Ability to analyze, learn, and implement evolving technologies.
  • Ability to successfully train and direct the work of library assistants and student assistants.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong interest in information literacy, primary source literacy, open access, and scholarly communication.
  • Familiarity with DACS, EAD, Marc21, and Dublin Core

Preferred:

  • Formal coursework or training in primary source literacy, object-based pedagogical strategy, and/or active learning techniques using primary sources and/or special collections.
  • Experience in curating exhibits.
  • Familiarity with archives management software including Archivists’ Toolkit and/or ArchivesSpace.
  • Strong foundation in intellectual property issues related to libraries, archives, and special collections.
  • Experience using ALMA, OCLC WMS, WorldCAT, and WorldShare ILL

 

Education
  • A master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution, or a graduate degree in archival studies, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Work Schedule Requirements
  • Normal office environment. Evening and weekend work expected.
