| Description | Dr. Emma LaPlace’s research focuses on the representation of math in pop culture and media, particularly the intersection of math and theater. Dr. LaPlace was a double-major in Mathematics and Drama during her undergraduate studies at Vassar College, and earned her PhD from Columbia University. Dr. LaPlace’s dissertation, Mathdramatics: Mathematicians in Plays, examined how mathematicians are portrayed in theatrical works. This otherwise unexplored research received the school’s Doctoral Dissertation Grant. Prior to Albertus Magnus College, Dr. LaPlace worked in the Department of Science and Math at SUNY Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), and acted professionally at theaters across Connecticut. She often serves as a math/theater consultant, including with the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences for the 2026 Year of Math, a national campaign dedicated to engaging the public in mathematics. | |
