Living Out the Pillars
Our Dominican Ministries office seeks to plan events and programming that supports the four pillars of the Dominican tradition: study, prayer, community, and service. These are the standards of life that Dominicans live by, and our hope is that our Albertus students of all faiths utilize these pillars to grow in their personal spirituality.
Activties and Opportunities
Students of all religious backgrounds are invited to participate in the many programs, activities, and celebrations coordinated by the Office of Dominican Ministries, centered around the four pillars.
Study
Student and lay preaching and reflection
As Dominicans are the order of preachers, our office continues the charism by offering abundant opportunities for students and lay preaching to reflect on the Gospel and presence of God in our lives. Most notably this happens during Advent, Lent, and at specific annual events such as the “Fra Angelico Preaching Compassion Through Art” event, where Art and Art Therapy students and faculty reflect on pieces of their art through a theological lens.
Peace Leadership
Peace Leadership is a formation workshop offered each semester. It is a workshop for student leaders on campus to grow in leadership skills and applications in a way that is positive, peaceful, and uplifting to the communities that they serve.

Worship
Part of what our office does is seek to nourish one’s prayer life and spirituality through religious practices and communities of worship. New Haven is home to many churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples. We are happy to share a list of houses of worship and services at local churches.

Stations of the Cross Event
Often done during the season of Lent, Stations of the Cross is a 14 part prayer devoted to Jesus’ last day on earth as a living person. This past year for Good Friday, our stations of the cross had specific intentions for the sufferings of our global world.

Community
Albert Week
Every year in November, the college celebrates our patron St. Albert the Great with a week full of events meant to build up our college community. Kicking off with placing the scarf on the statue of St. Albert the Great outside the Tagliatela Academic Center, this week is centered on the pillars and the celebration of our Albertus community!
Dominican National College Preaching in Action Conference
Come learn about our shared Dominican heritage with college students from all over the United States. The National College “Preaching in Action” Conference is a collaborative response to introduce college aged students to the foundations and characteristics of Dominican Spirituality. Gathering students from across the United States for 5 days of listening, learning, praying, and growing together. Reach out if you are interested in attending this conference!

Local Community Service
Research shows that service is currently the #1 way college aged students in university encounter God. Albertus is proud to have so many local partners to provide our campus community with the opportunity to encounter others and the greater community. Current service sites can be found in our Local Service brochure.
Habitat for Humanity
Albertus students have the opportunity to spend the day volunteering with Habitat for Humanity New Haven. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that helps families build and improve places to call home.
Community Garden
Started in 2017, the community garden was established as a way to continue the college’s strong tradition of working to promote social justice and care for creation. Proceeds from the garden go to local food banks as well as our Albertus community who may be in need of fresh produce. The community garden is also a classroom space for several courses.To get involved, please reach out to Dr. Ross Edwards.
