NEW HAVEN, Conn. (March 13, 2012) – Freshman Glenn Johnson (Newington, Conn.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week, while teammate Carlos Torres (Adjuntas, Puerto Rico) has been named GNAC Player of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday.
Johnson, who was named the GNAC Rookie of the Week back on Feb. 21, became the first-ever Albertus Magnus men's volleyball player to earn that honor. Torres' selection as the GNAC Player of the Week makes the sophomore the first-ever Falcon to earn that recognition as well.
Johnson led the Falcons last week with 19 kills in 34 tries as Albertus dropped its first match of the season, a 3-1 loss to Lasell in GNAC play. The Falcons are currently 10-1 on the year after a non-conference win over Sarah Lawrence on Monday evening.
Johnson registered just one hitting error in his 34 attempts at Lasell and hit .529 earning 4.75 kills per set. He added three digs to his effort as well.
Torres, who earned conference weekly honors for the first time in his career, was named the Player of the Week for the conference after dishing out a season-high 45 assists in the Falcons' first loss of the season. Despite the loss, Torres led the Falcons with 11.25 assists per set and recorded two service aces and eight digs on the night. He also tallied six kills in 16 tries.
