Albertus Magnus College on May 17 honored the Top 50 Juniors from New Haven's public high schools at a celebratory breakfast recognizing their academic achievements.
The Albertus Magnus College Office of Admission initiated the program six years ago to honor juniors for their accomplishments, and to encourage them to continue their records of success in their senior year and beyond. Selections are made by guidance counselors at each city high school, based on students' academic qualifications, particularly grade point average, class rank and leadership potential. Students have gone on to many colleges and universities, including Albertus Magnus College, Yale University, Fairfield University, Columbia University and the University of Indiana.
Cara Ann Cama, class of 2012 at Albertus Magnus College and the recently-crowned Miss New Haven County 2012 was the guest speaker. In 2008, Cama was a Top 50 Junior from the Sound School, and she shared with the students and their families how much that honor has continued to inspire her during her college career.
A biology major with a minor in communications at Albertus Magnus, Cama has been a scholar-athlete as a member of the women's cross country team, dean's list student, in the Honors Program, a resident assistant and president of the Science Club. In the summer of 2010 she participated in an intensive two-month biochemistry program with graduate students at Harvard University. During her college career she also worked part-time in a research laboratory at Yale University School of Medicine. She will begin work this summer as a post-graduate associate at the Yale School of Medicine, doing research on a rare form of obesity. Her goal is to be a neurosurgeon.
