Admission Process

For admission into the program the applicant must hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a minimum G.P.A. of a 3.0 on a 4.0 system.

The following must be submitted to have an application for admission evaluated:

1. An Application Form or Apply Online
2. A non-refundable $50.00 Application Fee (made out to Albertus Magnus College)
3. Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work completed.
4. Two letters of recommendation specifically addressing suitability for the program.
5. Proficiency in the English language, as demonstrated by at least three years of successful academic work at a college or university using English as the primary language of instruction and evaluation, or by a TOEFL score of 600 or better.
6. A completed application form and non-refundable fee of $50.00.
7. A written essay of 750-1,000 words, double spaced, on “The Writer’s Journey” detailing the applicant’s personal reflections on the writer’s craft and reasons for applying to the program.
8. A 1-page Writer’s Resume, providing a profile and indication of the area of writing interest, summary of educational and writing experience (including any publications, current submissions, works in progress), and employment history
9. A sample of written work in one genre as follows: 

• Non-fiction: A completed composition or portion of a piece of at least  2,500 words and a maximum of 5,000
• Fiction: A completed composition or portion of a piece of at least  2500 words and a maximum of 5000
• Poetry: Between 5 and 10 pages containing at least five completed poems

Students who lack some of the above requirements may be admitted to the program on a provisional basis. Provisionally admitted students will be required to earn a 3.0 cumulative grade point average in 9 credits before being fully admitted to the program.

Albertus Magnus College utilizes a rolling admissions system; therefore, students may apply throughout the year. Students may begin the program at the beginning of the Fall or Spring semester, which provides two starting points during the year. All new student applications must be complete and submitted to the Director no later than two weeks prior to the start of a semester. If an application is received after this timeframe, the new student will be considered for the next scheduled semester.

Transfer Credits

Albertus .Magnus College may accept a maximum of 6 graduate hours from an accredited institution toward satisfying the MFA Program degree requirements. Such credits must have been completed prior to entrance into the program and must satisfy degree requirements. Transfer credits must have been completed with a grade of B (3.0) or better within the last five years at a regionally accredited institution. Transfer credits will be considered on an individual basis. Students must submit an official transcript showing proof of completion of the course(s) to be transferred. All requests to transfer credits must be completed prior to starting the program
