Master of Science in Education

The Master of Science in Education is a 30 credit degree program is designed for teachers with initial or provisional certification who need to fulfill requirements for professional teacher certification in Connecticut. Candidates move through the program in an accelerated format and can complete all requirements for the thirty-credit degree in under two years. The M.S.Ed. focuses on competencies related to differentiated and literacy instruction, particularly as required in work with students having special learning needs, including specific needs of the English language learner (ELL) students. The program also includes course work in multiculturalism. A major component of the program focuses on the use of science based research as related to classroom assessment of student learning as a means for improving instruction. This program will utilize a sequenced, cohort-based, weekly class session format over an eight week period with classes meeting on-site for 2.5 hours. An additional 2.5 hour online element occurs asynchronously each week. The format utilizes learning teams for selected courses with the majority of coursework completed individually.

Admission requirements for Master of Science in Education:

• Valid initial Connecticut teaching certificate.
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• A minimum grade point average of 2.7 on a 4.0 system.
• Score of 600 or above on the TOEL exam if English is not the primary language.
• A working knowledge of computers (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required.

The applicant must submit:

• Completed application for admission to Graduate Programs, including an addendum relating specifically to application to the Master of Science in Education Program.
• Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate degree work.
• Two letters of recommendation, including a character reference, and an academic reference. [If currently teaching, a reference from a supervising administrator is encouraged.]
• Documentation of passing scores on the Praxis I tests, or official notice of waiver.
• Documentation of passing scores on applicable Praxis II tests.

• Successfully complete all 30 credit hours.
• Meet all academic regulations as stated in the program catalog.
• Completion of all requirements within seven years of matriculation.
• 3.0 overall GPA on a scale of 4.0. Students receiving a final grade of C- or lower in any course will be required to repeat that course.
• Payment of all tuition and fees.
